TheGermanwriterFriedrichHölderlinwrotetwoversionsofDerToddesEmpedoklesin1798and1800,andafinalthirdversionin1820,allthreeultimatelyunfinished.Theywereconceivedasfive-acttragediesandallthreedifferinplot.AccordingtoMichaelHamburger,Hölderlin’sEnglish-languagetranslator, themainreasonwhyHölderlinfinishednoversionoftheplaymustbethatheremainedtoocloselyidentifiedwithEmpedocles,attheveryperiodinhislifewhenhisownviewofthepoetasphilosopher,prophetandpriest–andastragichero–wassubjecttoperpetualcrisisandre-examination.
